Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
We know that Jesus calls us to welcome the stranger. Many of our congregations are divided, sometimes passionately, about the meaning of this call at this historic moment. Other congregations are deeply concerned about the potential separation of families and deportation of young leaders as a result of current policies – but are not sure what can be done to help.
Matthew 25 is a bipartisan Christian movement to protect and defend the vulnerable in the name of Jesus. We have developed an array of educational, pastoral and advocacy strategies for congregations to respond to God’s call in Leviticus 19: “The stranger who sojourns with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.”
We are also raising missionary funding for staff to support congregations in this process – including a protected website where immigrant and non-immigrant congregations and trustworthy legal service providers can be matched to work as a team to support a specific family.
In order to meet these goals of congregational education and engagement, we are inviting you – along with congregations throughout Southern California – to participate in Matthew 25 Sunday on June 4th. June 4th will be the celebration for many churches of Pentecost, a day when all nations received the Holy Spirit together.
We have a variety of resources available to you at matthew25socal.org/missionsunday in English and Spanish, including a brief video. We can also offer you a speaker for your Sunday services. There are various options for participation:
- 3-5 minute Mission Talk (potentially using our resource materials – video, power point, sermon helps etc.) and distributing pledge cards/envelopes for volunteer or donation commitments
- Focusing the service around the theme including the sermon (See sermon helps on resource page), including distributing pledge cards/envelopes
- Adult Christian Education Bible Study or Forum
- Hosting a speaker
- Fundraiser Food Sale (e.g. Tamales for Justice or Pupusas for Justice)
If you would like more information, please go to www.matthew25socal.org/missionsunday and click on “sign up”. One of our volunteers will be contacting you to follow up on whether you would like to participate and if so, how we can support you.
Please also keep immigrant and refugee families in your prayers.
May the Lord bless your reflections and actions,
Robert Chao and Erica Romero
